Can I Bring My Own Food on a Vineyard Tour?

Short answer? Usually, yes—but it depends.
Long answer? Let me save you from a soggy charcuterie board and a whole lot of unnecessary stress.
As someone who runs vineyard tours and has personally lived through the “Pinterest picnic gone wrong” experience, here’s what you actually need to know.

The General Rule: Most Vineyards Do Allow Outside Food
If you’re visiting vineyards in Connecticut (and most places, honestly), bringing your own food is typically allowed.
There are a few exceptions:
  • Vineyards that have on-site restaurants usually do not allow outside food
  • Special events may have different rules
But overall? Packing a picnic or charcuterie board is pretty common—and honestly, part of the vibe.
Why People Want to Bring Their Own Food
From what I see (and have done myself), people usually fall into one of these camps:
  • You want that beautiful, over-the-top charcuterie moment
  • You’re a picky eater or have dietary restrictions
  • You’re planning a more relaxed, linger-all-afternoon experience
And listen—I get it. A stunning spread + a glass of wine = perfection.

But Here’s What People Don’t Think About…This is where reality starts creeping in.

1. Time Isn’t Always on Your Side
If you’re on a structured tour (like mine), you’re typically at each vineyard for about an hour.

That means:
  • Set up
  • Eat
  • Pack everything back up
👉 You might spend more time managing your food than actually enjoying it.

2. Weather Can Ruin Everything (Ask Me How I Know)
I once set up a gorgeous charcuterie spread outside… because there was no indoor seating.

And then?
An unexpected storm rolled in.
Nothing like scrambling to save brie and crackers in the rain to humble you real quick. (and 100 other ingredients ... I took a charcuterie class, I go ALL OUT)

3. Keeping Food Cold Is a Whole Thing
People underestimate this
every time.
On a hot day:
  • Cheese sweats
  • Meat gets questionable
  • Chocolate melts into chaos
Unless you’re packing coolers and ice packs, your “elevated picnic” can go downhill fast.

4. You Need More Supplies Than You Think
This is the part almost everyone forgets:
  • Napkins
  • Plates
  • Forks/knives
  • Trash bags
  • Containers for leftovers
Because let me tell you…
blueberry goat cheese is not going back into that wrapper.

What I Actually Recommend (From Experience)
If you’re going to a vineyard on your own for the day?

👉 Absolutely bring a picnic or charcuterie.
It’s part of the experience, and vineyards typically only offer light snacks—and yes, they’re usually overpriced and more about convenience.
Fun fact: Pre-2020, most vineyards didn’t even have real food options. Regulations changed, and suddenly everyone had to step up their snack game.

What About Vineyard Tours?
If you’re booking an
all-inclusive tour like mine (Middle of the Vines)…
👉 You really don’t need to bring food.
We include:
  • Lunch
  • Snacks
  • Water
  • Reserved seating (no fighting for a picnic table or risking weather disasters)
The only time I’d say bring something extra?
  • A birthday cake
  • A special dessert
  • Something for a celebration

Final Verdict

Yes, you can bring your own food to most vineyards.
But whether you should depends on your plan.
If you’re:
  • Staying at one vineyard → go all out, bring the charcuterie
  • Doing multiple stops or a guided tour → keep it simple (or let someone else handle it)
Because the goal isn’t to manage a picnic…
👉 It’s to relax, sip, and actually enjoy the experience.
